The Years in Karting
-
Miguel’s first years were in the Cadet level, and in his first races he was the youngest driver, a circumstance that would be repeated along the years.Despite being the youngest driver of that time, Miguel won back-to-back Spanish titles in the Cadet level when he was ten and eleven.
A year later, he went on to compete in the Junior level, when he was still twelve, a very big leap indeed. But thanks to his skills and capacity to adapt to different machines, he was able to win the Catalan championship in his debut year.
Two years later, when he turned thirteen, he started his international career. His excellent results in Spain allowed him to find sponsors in the shape of companies related to karting that saw a driver with a great future in motor sports. Those companies lent him competitive equipment to let him go racing abroad.
In his first races he was the youngest driver, a circumstance that would be repeated along the years.
In 2003 he became the Junior Spanish Champion and was runner-up in the Trofeo Margutti, in Parma (Italy), considered to be the unofficial World Championship of that category. Also, he finished in eighth position in the European Championship, after winning three races.
At fifteen, in 2004, Miguel became official driver in the Formula A category, winning one race in the Italian Open Master and ending as runner-up in the Asian-Pacific championship at Japan’s Suzuka. That would be his first and only race in Asia for the next six years, as in 2010 he returned to the continent as a works Audi driver.
